The Cat and the Cheese

The Cat and the Cheese was painted during a stay in a psychiatric clinic, where painting became a way for me to focus, quiet my mind and create some sense of calm. I made this piece shortly after a change in medication left me feeling exhausted and dizzy, and I found myself thinking about my old cat, Marmite, who had died not long after I left home.

Marmite was endlessly food-motivated and would always try to steal whatever was within reach. I painted him from memory, imagining him caught in the act once again. The result became both a light-hearted portrait of his personality and a deeply personal act of remembering him during a difficult period in my life.

A watercolour painting by Nicola Hoving-Snow.
