Muta is an intimate, large-scale portrait of a silver-grey cat, exploring the relationship between presence, gaze and abstraction.
The close-up composition draws the viewer into direct encounter with the animal. Luminous amber eyes emerge from a shifting field of charcoal, silver and blue-grey, while the vivid turquoise ground creates a striking contrast with the softness and movement of the fur.
Balancing observation with expressive mark-making, the painting moves between detail and dissolution. Forms emerge, soften and disappear, allowing the subject to exist somewhere between recognisable portraiture and abstraction.
Through scale, colour and the intensity of the gaze, Muta invites a closer consideration of the quiet power and individuality of the animal.
