Leopard

Leopard was my first return to charcoal, pastel and gouache in more than fifteen years. I chose grey paper as the foundation of the piece, allowing the surface itself to become part of the animal’s colouring and helping me build the leopard’s markings through light, shadow and subtle tonal shifts.

The work was also shaped by a more uncomfortable thought: that threatened species like this may one day survive for many people only through photographs, paintings and other records of what once existed. I wanted the piece to capture not just the leopard’s beauty, but also its vulnerability, preserving something of its presence while reflecting on how easily living creatures can become memories.

A charcoal, pastel and gouache painting by Nicola Hoving-Snow.
