In Hiding

In Hiding captures the adventurous and curious nature of cats as they explore the world around them. I was particularly drawn to the way cats seem equally at home climbing and exploring high places, while also being masters of quietly observing from a hidden spot. In this piece, the cat has climbed into the branches and is peeping through the leaves, watching the world below.

Its bright, alert eyes contrast with its dark fur and the surrounding shadows, giving the impression that we have caught it in a private moment of observation. There is something playful about the idea that the cat can see us long before we notice it. I created the artwork using PanPastels and pastel pencils, layering colour and texture to capture the softness of the fur alongside the rough bark, delicate leaves and dappled light.

I enjoyed using the brighter greens and yellows against the deep tones of the cat to create a feeling of sunlight filtering through the foliage. For me, In Hiding celebrates the adventurous, inquisitive and quietly watchful characteristics that make cats such fascinating animals. It is a glimpse into their world—where climbing, exploring and finding the perfect hiding place are all part of the adventure.
