Under Her Watch

As soon as I saw the reference, I was drawn to the composition of the lioness and cub looking in opposite directions. There was something about their profiles and the closeness between them that I really wanted to draw. I chose graphite because I wanted to concentrate on the fine detail and their expressions without colour taking anything away from the overall composition. I wanted the relationship between the two of them to be what you noticed first.

A graphite painting by Jo Harmison.
