judgement
Judgement

Judgement was painted during a period of insomnia while I was staying in a psychiatric clinic. Unable to sleep, I would sit in the communal area and paint, giving my restless mind somewhere to focus. At the time, I was accustomed to creating highly detailed studies of animals and fur, but here I deliberately challenged myself to work more loosely. Rather than describing every hair, I wanted light, colour and suggestion to create the animal.

I became fascinated by the strong natural sunlight falling across the cat, illuminating parts of its body while allowing others to disappear almost completely into shadow. Cats always seem to find the warmest, sunniest and often highest place in a room, and I wanted to capture that instantly familiar sight. Perched above the viewer, half emerging from the darkness, the cat has that unmistakable feline expression: calmly watching, silently assessing and, of course, judging your every move.

A water and ink painting by Nicola Hoving-Snow.

Details:

Medium: Water and ink on 300gsm hot pressed paper

Size: 4.8 × 7 in

Framed: Framed

Framed size: 17x23cm
